Ismailia truck crash kills 18, mostly child laborers
A fatal collision involving two pick-up trucks carrying agricultural day laborers occurred in the Al-Dawawis area of Ismailia governorate, Egypt. The accident resulted in at least 18 deaths, with medical sources reporting that most of the deceased were teenagers aged 13 and 14. The youngest victim was reported to be 10 years old. The Ministry of Health recorded a total of 47 casualties, including approximately 30 injuries.
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has ordered an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. The Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labour have announced they will provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured workers. The incident has reignited concerns regarding child labor in Egypt, where official figures indicate at least 1.3 million minors are engaged in such work. The use of overcrowded pick-up trucks is a common, though hazardous, method of transport for millions of workers in Egypt’s informal economy, which accounts for roughly 67 percent of national employment.
