Ismailia agricultural worker vehicle accident

Overview

A collision involving two pickup trucks carrying agricultural laborers in the Al-Dawawis area of Egypt’s Ismailia governorate resulted in at least 18 deaths and approximately 30 injuries. Many of the deceased were reported to be child laborers aged 13 and 14, though medical sources noted the youngest victim was 10 years old. The victims were primarily workers from two villages in the Sharqiya governorate traveling to a farm in Ismailia.

In the aftermath, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ordered an investigation, while various ministries announced financial assistance for the victims' families. Specifically, the Ministry of Social Solidarity and the Ministry of Labour announced that 400,000 EGP would be provided to the family of each deceased person.

The incident has highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the safety of informal workers and the prevalence of child labor in Egypt. Official data suggests at least 1.3 million minors are engaged in child labor in the country, and the informal economy accounts for roughly 67 percent of total employment. Overcrowded vehicles remain a common, yet dangerous, mode of transport for millions of irregular workers in the agricultural and construction sectors.

Medical officials have been monitoring the recovery of the injured, who received treatment at several specialized hospitals, including Al-Qassasin Specialized Hospital, Abu Khalifa Emergency and Micro-Surgery Hospital, Al-Tal al-Kabir, and the Ismailia Medical Complex. Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, visited the injured workers to oversee the response. As of the latest reports, 13 individuals have been discharged following full recovery, while others remain under medical care.
