Egypt warns Ethiopia over new Nile River dam plans
Egypt has issued renewed warnings against Ethiopia's plans to construct additional dams on the Nile River, asserting its right to defend its national water security. Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated that Cairo will not allow additional dams to be built on the river, marking the third such public warning from Egypt in recent weeks.
Reports indicate that Ethiopia is moving to advance three proposed hydropower projects on the Blue Nile: Karadobi, Mandaya, and Beko Abo. These projects, which could potentially generate approximately 5,700 megawatts, are part of Addis Ababa's broader strategy to expand electricity access and drive economic growth.
Egypt and Sudan have historically opposed Ethiopia's dam projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), demanding a legally binding trilateral agreement regarding water flow management. While Ethiopia maintains that these projects are essential for energy security and will not harm downstream nations, Egypt has signaled it will use various tools to prevent any party from controlling Nile water flows to downstream countries.
