Egypt Water Minister Hani Souleym Visits Japan for Smart Water Cooperation

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Souleym travelled to Japan at the invitation of Japanese officials, including Yuko Kamikawa and Minister Yasuishi Kaneko. He participated in the 50th Japan Water Day events in Tokyo, delivering remarks on the need for international cooperation, transparency and adherence to international water law for trans‑boundary rivers.

During the visit he inspected the Tone River management system, a highly integrated digital‑based network of dams, canals and flood‑control structures that uses remote monitoring, AI‑driven decision support and early‑warning tools. Souleym highlighted Egypt’s reliance on the Nile, its severe water scarcity and the country’s shift toward a “Water Management 2.0” platform that leverages digital transformation and smart infrastructure. The trip aimed to exchange technical expertise, explore joint research and build capacity for Egypt’s own smart‑water initiatives.
