Egyptian Electricity Sector Plans Major Capacity Boost and Backup Communications System
The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company presented its 2026/27 budget, targeting a peak electricity demand of more than 41,500 MW under a medium scenario and up to 42,300 MW under a high scenario. The plan includes a 23.1 billion‑EGP investment to raise generation to 263 billion kWh, expand the subscriber base to 47.14 million, and install about 2.5 million prepaid meters by the end of the fiscal year. Coordination with the petroleum sector will secure fuel for power plants, while network reinforcement and energy‑efficiency programs aim to sustain reliable supply.
Separately, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company signed a contract to build a redundant 4G‑based communication system for the Greater Cairo regional control centre. The five‑month project will deploy 200 Huawei 4G routers and dual‑mobile‑network links to ensure continuous data exchange between substations and the control centre if fiber‑optic links fail, enhancing the reliability of the national grid’s SCADA and monitoring systems.
