Egyptian electricity grid upgrades

Overview

In late July 2026 a multi‑day power failure hit Al Qanaia and villages in Sharqia. The Ismailia electricity company dispatched ten emergency transformers to provide temporary supply while repairs continued, and officials warned residents to protect equipment from voltage surges.

A week later the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company signed two contracts to connect the Badrashin and Kemet El‑Sokhna transformer stations to the national 220 kV grid, adding new lines, cable terminations and grounding kits. The projects are intended to improve network efficiency, support industrial growth and reinforce the unified grid.

In early August the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company presented its 2026/27 budget, earmarking 23.1 billion EGP to raise generation capacity to 263 billion kWh, expand the subscriber base to over 47 million and install roughly 2.5 million prepaid meters. The plan also includes a redundant 4G‑based communication system for the Greater Cairo regional control centre, deploying 200 Huawei routers and dual‑mobile links to safeguard SCADA data exchange if fiber links fail. Together, these measures aim to meet a projected peak demand of up to 42,300 MW and enhance the reliability of Egypt’s electricity supply.
