Egyptian intelligence officials discuss Libyan and Palestinian elections

Egyptian intelligence officials held high-level meetings in Egypt to discuss political stability and upcoming elections in both Libya and Palestine.

In El Alamein, Saddam Haftar, deputy commander of the Libyan eastern forces, met with Egyptian Intelligence Chief Hassan Rashad. The discussions focused on expanding bilateral cooperation and the necessity of unifying Libyan institutions to facilitate simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. The meeting comes amid reports of a potential U.S. initiative aimed at merging Libya's competing governments, a proposal that has faced opposition from some Libyan leaders but received support from eastern and southern municipalities.

Separately, Hassan Rashad met with a Palestinian delegation led by Hussein al-Sheikh, Deputy President of Palestine, to discuss Palestinian elections and reconciliation efforts. The talks addressed the ongoing political division between Fatah and Hamas and the situation in the West Bank. Al-Sheikh indicated that legislative elections are planned for November 2026, with a contingency plan to form the Palestinian National Council through national consensus should the elections be obstructed.
