Egyptian MP Abdulrahman Bashari Calls for Faster Fertilizer Distribution Reform to Protect Food Security

Member of Parliament Abdulrahman Bashari warned that the ongoing crisis in Egypt’s subsidised fertilizer distribution – characterised by reduced farmer quotas and delayed disbursements under a new system – poses a serious threat to agricultural production and national food security. He said the problem directly impacts millions of farmers and their families, and could drive some into the black market as free‑fertiliser prices soar.

Bashari urged the government to act swiftly: review the distribution system, remove technical and administrative obstacles, strengthen monitoring to prevent leakage, and ensure timely delivery of the required quantities. He stressed that any corrective measures must be fair and not punish farmers, aiming to stabilise crop yields, market prices and overall food‑security goals.
