Egypt agricultural food‑security initiatives

Overview

In early June 2026 Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation launched a suite of projects to strengthen food security and climate resilience, including joint aquifer management, mangrove expansion, World Bank‑financed schemes and a cross‑ministerial water‑footprint committee. A Polish delegation visited on 23 June, pledging investment in food‑processing, agritech, veterinary services, grain‑silo infrastructure and higher wheat imports, and holding workshops on plant‑health regulations. On 6 July the agriculture minister Alaa Farouk ordered measures to curb staple‑food prices by converting idle ministry assets into modern markets, coordinating with Future Egypt and the Ministry of Supply, targeting a doubling of domestic output of meat, poultry, dairy and crops and banning middlemen to link farms directly to consumers. A 12 July report noted the Central Pesticide Laboratory had analysed over 37 000 samples and taken 189 000 regulatory actions in the first half of the year. On 13 July Farouk announced a seed partnership with the Arab Alliance for Potato Seed Production and PepsiCo to raise domestic summer potato seed to about 70 % of demand, reducing imports and supporting smallholders. The same day a JICA‑funded “Market‑Oriented Agriculture for Arab Countries” programme was launched with delegations from Egypt, Palestine, Morocco, Iraq and Sudan, promoting the SHEP approach and field demonstrations in Minya. By 16 July the ministry expanded pre‑emptive pest‑control campaigns against Fall armyworm and tomato leaf‑miner, covering roughly 1.35 million feddans of corn and spraying about 92 515 feddans with approved pesticides. During the week of 17‑23 July the ministry reported further farmer support actions: an international animal‑wealth conference, a 75‑company exhibition, meetings with poultry and dairy producers, and plans to expand date‑palm and olive cultivation in South Sinai.
