Egypt agricultural food-security and export initiatives
Overview
Since early June 2026, Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation has conducted a multi-pronged food-security drive. Key initiatives include managing the north-west coastal aquifer, expanding Red Sea mangrove cultivation, and establishing a cross-ministerial water-footprint committee. The ministry has also focused on fertilizer management and pest control. In July 2026, authorities treated over 289,000 feddans for pests and seized 56,000 illegal pesticide packages. In August 2026, the ministry unveiled a private investment plan utilizing digital transformation and a “productive village” model to expand cultivated land and boost agro-industrial processing. Efforts to bolster wheat production have intensified through initiatives like the ‘Izra’ program in Sharqia. By late August 2026, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates projected Egypt to lead Arab nations in wheat production, with output reaching approximately 10.5 million tons. Agricultural exports have also seen significant activity. Minister Alaa Farouk announced that exports reached 6.8 million tons since the start of the year, led by citrus fruits at 2.3 million tons, followed by potatoes, sweet potatoes, grapes, and onions. To maintain quality, the Ministry has implemented a digital coding and tracking system for export farms. In late August 2026, National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) data showed weekly food exports reached approximately 172,000 tonnes across 3,516 shipments. This included 36,000 tonnes of vegetables, led by sweet potatoes, and 25,000 tonnes of fruit, led by strawberries. Sudan was identified as the top export destination. In late August 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources issued a joint denial regarding reports of reduced subsidized fertilizer quotas. They confirmed the annual quota remains fixed at 2.4 million tons and stated that subsidized sale prices for farmers will not change.
