Egyptian Humanitarian Official Killed in Gaza Airstrike

An Israeli strike on a civilian vehicle in the al‑Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City on 7 July 2026 killed Mohamed (Mohammed) al‑Waheidi, the director of public relations for the Egyptian Committee for Relief in Gaza. Al‑Waheidi had been organizing public screenings of FIFA World Cup matches for displaced families ahead of Egypt’s round‑of‑16 match against Argentina. The attack also killed two other Palestinians, including a child, and injured several others.

Israel’s military said the strike targeted a Hamas militant, but Palestinian officials and witnesses said the vehicle carried only civilians. Hundreds attended al‑Waheidi’s funeral, where his body was wrapped in Palestinian and Egyptian flags. The incident underscores the continued danger to humanitarian workers in Gaza even during a temporary ceasefire.

The death occurred hours before the Egypt‑Argentina World Cup game, drawing international attention to the humanitarian toll of the conflict and prompting Egyptian authorities to raise the issue with Israeli officials.
