Egyptian Stock Exchange sees weekly losses amid investor selling
The Egyptian Stock Exchange experienced a week of losses following several weeks of record gains. The total market capitalization fell by 0.4%, amounting to a loss of approximately 17.5 billion pounds, dropping from 4.2364 trillion to 4.2189 trillion pounds.
Performance varied across different indices. The benchmark EGX30 index fell by approximately 0.9% over the week, though it saw a modest 0.41% rebound on Thursday. In contrast, smaller-cap stocks faced steeper declines; the EGX70 Equal Weight Index fell roughly 3.6%, and the broader EGX100 declined 0.49% on Thursday after a larger weekly drop.
Trading activity showed a divide between local and international investors. Egyptian institutions recorded net purchases of approximately 1.2883 billion pounds, supported by banks and investment funds. Conversely, foreign investors recorded net sales of 1.1384 billion pounds, and Arab investors recorded net sales of 503.6 million pounds. The market appears to be becoming more selective, with differentiation increasing based on liquidity, earnings prospects, and balance-sheet strength.
