Egyptian market reforms push cap past 4 trillion
Overview
The EGX30 continued its late‑July swing, reaching a historic 4‑trillion‑pound market capitalisation after an early‑August rally that lifted the index to 54,097. A brief pull‑back on 31 July saw the benchmark slip 0.35 % to 54,094 as domestic investors took profits and a reinstated stamp duty added pressure. Foreign institutions were net buyers, acquiring roughly £17 billion, while Egyptian investors sold about £16.7 billion. Low‑volatility EGX35‑LV rose 1 % and the SME‑focused EGX70 gained 1.36 %. The National Bank of Egypt remained the top market participant with about 16 % of trading value, followed by Citi Bank Egypt and Abu Dhabi First Bank Egypt.
On 3 August the exchange announced a reform package that includes new financial products, AI‑driven technology upgrades, a 15 % tax discount for listed companies for three years, and a reduced stamp‑duty for non‑resident investors. Daily trading volumes have already exceeded £13 billion and investor registrations topped 385 000, signalling growing confidence.
Two days later, on 5 August, the EGX30 touched the 55,000‑point mark for the first time, closing at 54,676 points (+0.03%). The broader EGX100 rose 0.94% to 26,106 points and the EGX70 gained 1.14% to 19,991 points. Total market capitalisation grew by roughly £52 billion to about £4.074 trillion. Analysts attributed the rally to calm geopolitical conditions and strong activity in the banking and healthcare sectors, while cautioning against buying stocks that have already surged.
