Egypt's Irrigation Minister attends Sahara Exhibition to discuss water technology
Egypt's Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, participated in the opening of the Sahara Exhibition alongside Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk. The event serves as a platform connecting water, agriculture, technology, and investment.
Minister Sewilam highlighted the critical water challenges facing Egypt due to population growth and climate change. He noted that per capita water availability has decreased from approximately 2,000 cubic meters annually in the 1960s to about 472 cubic meters currently, as the population reaches 120 million.
To address these challenges, the Ministry is implementing the ‘Water System Generation 2.0’ vision. This strategy focuses on using advanced technologies such as mathematical modeling, digital applications, satellite imagery, drones, and artificial intelligence to manage water resources. The Minister also emphasized the success of large-scale water treatment and reuse projects, including the New Delta, Bahr al-Baqar, and Al-Mahsama stations, which collectively add approximately 4.80 billion cubic meters of treated water to the system annually.
