Egypt's National Council for Childhood and Motherhood intervenes in Damietta abuse case

The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood in Egypt has intervened to protect a 13-year-old girl in Damietta after a video circulated on social media showing her with visible injuries, bruises, and swelling around her eyes.

Dr. Sahar El-Sonbati, President of the Council, directed urgent measures to ensure the child's safety and coordinated with the Public Prosecutor's Office to initiate a legal investigation. Reports indicate the girl previously resided in Gamasa, Dakahlia, and fled her mother's home due to alleged abuse by her mother and stepfather. The girl's father is currently serving a sentence in another case.

The Public Prosecutor has ordered a medical examination at a government hospital to document injuries and provide necessary care. Following the medical assessment, the girl will be placed in an appropriate care facility in coordination with the Ministry of Social Solidarity to ensure a safe environment. The prosecutor has also summoned the girl's mother and stepfather for questioning.
