Egyptian state intervention in domestic abuse cases

Overview

Egyptian social welfare and child protection agencies have intervened in separate domestic abuse cases following the circulation of videos on social media.

In late August, the Ministry of Social Solidarity deployed a rapid intervention team to Cairo to assist a mother reportedly assaulted by her two sons. While security forces apprehended the suspects, the Ministry committed to providing the victim with social, psychological, and protective support.

In mid-September, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood intervened in Damietta to protect a 13-year-old girl showing visible injuries. The Public Prosecutor's Office initiated a legal investigation into alleged abuse by the girl's mother and stepfather, ordering medical examinations and coordinating with the Ministry of Social Solidarity to place the child in a care facility.
