Eiffel Tower closed following staff strike over gender discrimination claims
The Eiffel Tower was closed on Monday following a staff strike protesting the treatment of female employees during a visit by a Hindu religious delegation. The group, approximately 100 members of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), visited the monument on Saturday while in France for the inauguration of a new temple near Paris.
Staff unions alleged that female workers were sidelined, replaced by men, or instructed to avoid certain areas to minimize interactions with women, as requested by the delegation. The monument's operator, SETE, admitted that the group had requested arrangements to limit interactions with women and acknowledged that these conditions should not have been accepted as they conflicted with the company's values of gender equality.
The incident has drawn significant political condemnation in France. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire announced an investigation into the matter, stating that equality must apply throughout the city. SETE's president, Ariel Weil, reaffirmed the landmark's commitment to republican values and gender equality. BAPS issued an apology for any distress or inconvenience caused, noting the visit was coordinated to minimize disruption to other visitors.
