Eiffel Tower staff strike over gender discrimination claims
Overview
The Eiffel Tower was temporarily closed following a staff strike triggered by the treatment of female employees during a visit by a delegation from the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). The group, approximately 100 members, visited the monument while in France for a temple inauguration near Paris.
Staff unions alleged that the monument’s operator, SETE, complied with requests from the delegation to sideline female workers, replace them with men, or instruct them to avoid certain areas to minimize interaction with women. SETE admitted that the group had requested arrangements to limit interactions with women and acknowledged that such conditions conflicted with the company’s values of gender equality. SETE president Ariel Weil described the incident as “unacceptable” and reaffirmed the landmark’s commitment to republican values.
The incident drew condemnation from Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire, who announced an investigation into how the decision was implemented. While BAPS issued an apology for any distress caused, the organization denied making specific gender-based requests, stating the visit was coordinated with management. India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the controversy as a matter between the specific entities involved. The landmark reopened to visitors on Tuesday.
