Eiffel Tower reopens after strike over religious group visit
The Eiffel Tower reopened on Tuesday following a one-day staff strike triggered by allegations of gender discrimination. The protest occurred after a delegation of approximately 100 members from the Hindu organization Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) visited the monument on Saturday.
Union representatives and staff reported that female employees were instructed to vacate their workstations or avoid certain areas to accommodate the religious group, with male colleagues taking their places. Ariel Weil, president of the operating company Société d'Exploitation de la tour Eiffel (SETE), described the incident as unacceptable, admitting that management had mistakenly accepted the delegation's request for limited interaction with women.
BAPS has issued an apology for the controversy but denied making any specific gender-based requests, stating that the visit was coordinated with management and that no one was denied access to the landmark. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has distanced itself from the incident, characterizing it as a matter between the involved parties. An internal investigation has been launched by Paris authorities to determine how the decision was implemented.
