Eight arrested in Playa del Carmen as Yucatán leads Mexico in small‑scale drug crimes

Mexican authorities detained eight men in three separate operations in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo. The men are accused of narcotics trafficking, extortion and orchestrating armed attacks on local bars and restaurants. Among those captured was Miguel “N” (alias “Kilo”), identified as the alleged leader of the group. Police seized marijuana‑like plant material, crystal substances resembling methamphetamine, white powders, a 9‑mm handgun, ammunition and a vehicle with plates from the state of Guerrero.

The raids were coordinated by the state prosecutor’s office, the police investigation unit and the specialized anti‑narcotics prosecutor, with support from the national security cabinet, including the Secretariat of Public Security, the Secretariat of Government, the Army, the Navy and the National Guard. The suspects and seized items were handed over to the public prosecutor for further legal action.

Separately, the Secretariat of the National Public Safety System reported that the state of Yucatán is now the leading Mexican region for small‑scale drug crimes, registering 34 federal investigations and topping the peninsula. Yucatán ranks fourth nationally, far surpassing neighboring Quintana Roo, which recorded only four cases. The data highlight a growing trend of narcotics‑related offenses across the Yucatán Peninsula.
