Mexico anti‑narco crackdown: seizures, arrests, recruitment

Overview

The anti‑narco campaign that began in early 2026 has broadened into a nationwide wave of drug‑lab dismantlements, large‑scale drug seizures, weapons busts and recruitment drives. In May, navy intelligence helped shut three clandestine meth labs in Sinaloa, seizing more than four tonnes of methamphetamine. A June operation in Chihuahua dismantled a synthetic‑drug laboratory, recovering 2,960 kg of chemicals and 2,000 L of meth. June saw a series of coordinated raids: 150 kg of meth in Baja California; a Cessna intercepted in Mexicali with 24 kg of cocaine, 150 kg of meth and a cache of military‑grade weapons; a 1.3‑tonne cocaine haul off Guerrero’s coast; and a record 24,400 L of liquid meth in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Simultaneous seizures included 1,140 kg of cocaine near Chiapas, 270 kg at Manzanillo port, and 217 kg hidden in a Mexico City van. The Navy also seized 2,990 kg of cocaine off Oaxaca. Parallel operations targeted smaller shipments: parcel‑driven meth in Jalisco and Sonora, 12 kg of meth in Tijuana, and 165 kg of cocaine at Tijuana airport. Federal and state forces seized weapons, explosives and illicit fuels in multiple states, and arrested dozens of suspects, including the “Los Sierra” gang leaders in Michoacán. Recruitment and professionalisation have accompanied the enforcement surge. Veracruz launched a police‑recruitment drive; the state added 47 new officers. The Guardia Nacional opened enlistment modules in Veracruz, offering a 19,060‑peso monthly salary. Police pay raises were announced in Coahuila and Ahome, and the National Guard began a new hiring program. In late July, the Navy seized 834 kg of cocaine in Tonalá, Chiapas, and a week later intercepted a vessel 385 nm off the Chiapas coast, recovering 1,140 kg of cocaine, fuel drums and equipment, arresting three crew members. The haul brought cumulative maritime cocaine seizures to about 80 tons.
