Eight Fatalities Recorded on Portuguese Beaches Over Two-Month Summer Period

Portugal's National Maritime Authority reported eight deaths on its beaches between 1 May and 30 June. The period saw 376 rescues and 492 first‑aid actions. Four victims drowned – one on a supervised beach, one in an unsupervised maritime zone, and two on unsupervised beaches – while the other four died from sudden illness under similar conditions.

The authority urges the public to use permanently supervised beaches, keep constant watch over children, respect flag signals and follow lifeguard directions to prevent further tragedies.
