Eirini K passenger-vehicle carrier sinks off Sifnos

The Greek-flagged open-type passenger-vehicle carrier ‘Eirini K’ sank approximately one nautical mile east of Sifnos. The vessel was being towed from Kalymnos to the Perama shipyards when it experienced a sudden influx of water into its engine room.

The two people on board were able to abandon the ship in time and were rescued by the tugboat; both are reported to be safe and in good health. The ship sank within minutes after the water ingress could not be contained.

The Hellenic Coast Guard deployed patrol and anti-pollution vessels to the area to monitor the site and prevent potential marine pollution. According to the ship's owner, the ‘Eirini K’ was not carrying any fuel or lubricants at the time of the incident. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the vessel taking on water.
