Eğitim Sen protests Ministry of National Education's new integrated classroom model

The Education and Science Workers' Union (Eğitim Sen) has voiced strong opposition to a new “Integrated Class Model” being prepared by the Ministry of National Education. The model aims to combine different grade levels in the same classroom at middle schools with low student numbers. Specifically, the plan involves grouping 5th and 6th graders together, and 7th and 8th graders together. A pilot program is expected to launch in approximately 30 schools out of roughly 700 middle schools nationwide that have fewer than 30 students.

Eğitim Sen argues that the model lacks scientific and pedagogical basis, noting that students of different ages and developmental stages will face difficulties following distinct curricula simultaneously. The union criticized the Ministry for implementing such significant changes without consulting teachers, parents, or students.

During a protest in front of the Ministry, union leader Kemal Irmak also addressed broader systemic issues, including the “Turkey Century Education Model,” demands for higher teacher wages, and concerns regarding the secular and scientific nature of the current education system. Protesters called for better budget allocation, improved school safety, and an end to what they described as the ideological imposition of educational policies.
