Eğitim Sen opposition to Turkish education policies
Overview
The Education and Science Workers' Union (Eğitim Sen) has launched several criticisms against new educational policies introduced by the Turkish Ministry of National Education.
Initially, the union opposed a proposed ‘Integrated Class Model’ designed for middle schools with low student populations. This model intended to group different grade levels, such as 5th and 6th graders, into single classrooms. Eğitim Sen argued the plan lacked a ‘scientific and pedagogical basis’ and criticized the Ministry for failing to consult teachers, parents, or students before planning the pilot program.
Subsequently, the union shifted its focus to a new 12-module Alevism-Bektashism training program being implemented under the ‘Turkey Century Education Model’. Eğitim Sen claimed the initiative threatens the secular nature of public education and state neutrality. The union argued that while the scientific study of a faith is distinct from state-led instruction, the new program risks making the state an ‘arbiter of religious legitimacy.’
