Ekiti State Governor Accused of Intimidating Opposition Ahead of Election

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has alleged that Governor Biodun Oyebanji is using security agencies and state officials to intimidate opposition members before the June 20 governorship election. PDP aspirant Oluwole Oluyede said a government official harassed residents collecting Permanent Voter Cards on June 3, leading to a fracas, and that the deputy governor ordered the arrest of opposition figures, including Oluyede’s cousin.

PDP deputy governorship candidate Ayodeji Ogunsakin announced that police operatives conducted overnight raids in Ikere Ekiti and other areas, detaining party members for displaying campaign materials or supporting PDP candidates. The party urged President Bola Tinubu and security authorities to investigate. Ekiti State Commissioner for Information Taiwo Olatunbosun rejected the claims, calling them “untrue and laughable” and asserting that the governor is a peace‑loving leader.

The accusations raise concerns about political harassment and could heighten tension as the election approaches.
