Osun election tension: account freeze and security concerns
Overview
As the August 15, 2026, Osun State governorship election approached, financial and political tensions escalated significantly. On August 5, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order to freeze three state government accounts, including a Federal Allocation Account, as part of an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of ₦11 billion to ₦13.7 billion in ecology, intervention, and FAAC funds. The EFCC cited suspicious transfers to corporate entities and a ‘ghost workers’ salary scandal.
Governor Ademola Adeleke and state officials challenged the legality of the freeze, arguing it was a politically motivated attempt to disrupt the administration. The House of Representatives Minority Caucus further accused President Bola Tinubu of issuing a ‘panicky, belated afterthought’ directive regarding the EFCC, describing the administration as a ‘government at war with itself.’
To mitigate concerns of federal interference in the electoral process, President Tinubu directed the EFCC to vacate the order and unfreeze the accounts. This intervention sparked debate over the independence of anti-graft agencies versus the need for electoral neutrality.
On election day, security was heightened with the Nigeria Police Force implementing movement restrictions and banning non-state security actors like Amotekun. Despite reports of political violence, voter intimidation, and allegations of vote-buying by both the APC and Accord parties, some polling units reported smooth voting. In response to reported violence and killings, Governor Adeleke announced plans for an independent commission of inquiry to investigate electoral-related incidents.
