Istanbul political landscape shifts amid mayoral legal battles

The political landscape in Istanbul is undergoing significant shifts following a series of judicial actions and arrests targeting municipal leaders. Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), is currently facing legal proceedings that could lead to a new mayoral election if his prison sentence is upheld by the Court of Cassation.

Recent operations have also seen the appointment of trustees to the Esenyurt and Şişli municipalities, alongside the detention of Ataşehir Deputy Mayor Murat Güneş and other officials. These developments have altered the arithmetic of the İBB Council; the CHP's seat count has reportedly decreased from 186 to 154, while the People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) has increased from 130 to 142.

Detained officials, including Şişli Mayor Resul Emrah Şahan and Ataşehir Mayor Onursal Adıgüzel, have criticized the actions as an assault on the national will and democratic processes. Meanwhile, İmamoğlu has raised concerns regarding a potential 20 billion dollar loss related to a fund crisis and has asserted that voters will hold the government accountable at the ballot box.
