Ghana's New Patriotic Party finishes nationwide constituency executive elections

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) held constituency executive elections on July 11‑12, 2026 at 385 voting centres across Ghana. The exercise, aimed at reorganising the party's grassroots structures ahead of future national contests, saw candidates vie for local leadership positions in many constituencies.

Party flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia urged members to stay united regardless of the outcomes, praising the willingness of candidates to serve and emphasizing that “we remain members of one family.” Similar calls for unity were echoed by newly elected executives in Asuogyaman, Hohoe and other areas.

While most polls were peaceful, several constituencies experienced disruptions. In Afigya Sekyere East, candidate Kwaku Ofosu won with 893 votes after a brief suspension caused by a violent disturbance that led to the arrest of media personality Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. In Bantama, three individuals were detained after they destroyed voting materials and assaulted election officials despite a court injunction and the Electoral Commission’s withdrawal of support. Other constituencies, such as Afigya Sekyere East, reported gunshots fired by police to disperse crowds.

The elections also prompted academic commentary warning that ignoring court orders could deepen party disunity. Overall, the NPP completed its internal elections with a mixture of smooth results and isolated incidents of violence and legal challenges.
