Ghana NPP split deepens, elections and reforms

Entities: New Patriotic Party · Justin Kodua Frimpong · Titus Glover · National Democratic Congress · Eastern Region

Overview

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) continues to wrestle with internal divisions as it prepares for the 2028 general election. After National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah announced bids for National First Vice‑Chairman in July 2026, the party has pursued a series of organisational reforms and contested leadership contests.

In May the NPP reconstituted its standing and sector committees, appointing former officials to key posts and giving the four 2026 presidential aspirants co‑chairmanship of new policy committees – a move framed as a unity‑building exercise. Former minister Awentami Paul Afoko has pushed a data‑driven “3Rs” agenda (Reunite, Rebuild, Recapture) and warned that the party’s decline from 169 seats in 2016 to 87 in 2024 stems from factionalism.

Grass‑roots disputes have flared: over 1,000 members in Asante Mampong threatened to boycott polling‑station elections over alleged register irregularities; court injunctions have halted elections in several constituencies; and the party’s Savannah‑region and Western‑North elections have been contested on procedural grounds. Parallel disciplinary petitions have targeted former MP Kennedy Agyapong for anti‑party conduct.

Leadership rallies have underscored support for flag‑bearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, while senior figures such as Bernard Antwi‑Boasiako and Justin Kodua Frimpong have campaigned for chair and secretary posts. The NPP scheduled its National Delegates Conference for 19 September 2026, later moved to 3 October 2026, and announced a diaspora conference in Massachusetts for July 2026.

Despite repeated calls for unity – from regional chairmen, diaspora leaders and newly elected constituency executives – internal disputes, court challenges and competing bids for senior posts indicate that the party’s internal split remains a defining feature of its pre‑2028 mobilisation.
