El Campín stadium construction delayed until December 2028
The construction of the new El Campín stadium in Bogotá has faced delays, with the official delivery date pushed from December 2027 to December 2028. The Bogotá District Institute of Recreation and Sport (IDRD) confirmed that construction has not yet begun due to a seven-month delay by the contractor, Sencia, in submitting required traffic studies to the Mobility Secretariat.
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán announced significant changes to the project scope. To ensure the city maintains a venue for sports and concerts during construction, the new stadium will be built in a different sector of the complex, allowing the current Nemesio Camacho El Campín to remain operational.
The redesigned stadium will feature an increased capacity of over 60,000 spectators, up from the original 45,000 projection, with the potential to accommodate up to 80,000 people for certain entertainment events. Planned infrastructure includes a retractable roof, a retractable south stand, and approximately 800 security cameras. The project aims to transform the area into a multi-purpose sports, cultural, and entertainment district.
