Dominican Republic expands tourism through sports and digital innovation

The Dominican Republic is implementing several strategic initiatives to expand and modernize its tourism sector. A key development is a bilateral agreement with Argentina to promote sports tourism, featuring events in disciplines such as padel, golf, and surf. This partnership, announced by Tourism Minister David Collado and Argentine Secretary Daniel Scioli, also includes increased airline connectivity and a joint cultural event in Miami.

Technological advancement is a central theme, with Venezuela also exploring artificial intelligence to enhance its tourism competitiveness. Experts in the Dominican Republic are advocating for a national digital agenda to integrate AI and data analysis into destination management.

Economically, the Dominican food manufacturing industry is valued at approximately $2.9 billion, serving as a vital link between agriculture and the tourism sector. Industry leaders are calling for a stronger alliance between tourism and local agriculture to create a circular economy, ensuring that hotel and restaurant demand supports domestic producers.

Tourism statistics show significant growth, with the Dominican Republic receiving over 8.5 million visitors between January and August 2026, a 6.9% increase from the previous year. The country continues to strengthen its international presence through major events like the International Tourism Fair of Latin America (FIT) in Buenos Aires and the IFTM Top Resa in Paris.
