El Fasher massacre: UN mission identifies genocidal indicators in Sudan
One year after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of El Fasher in October 2025, survivors and UN investigators are detailing the scale of atrocities committed during the city's 18-month siege. An independent UN fact-finding mission concluded that the RSF's campaign against non-Arab communities, specifically the Zaghawa and Fur, showed “indicators of a genocidal path.”
The UN Human Rights Office estimates that over 6,000 people were killed in just three days during the final stages of the takeover. Reports indicate widespread sexual violence, torture, arbitrary detention, and mass killings. During the siege, the RSF reportedly imposed conditions designed to destroy local communities, including cutting off food supplies until residents were forced to consume animal fodder.
Survivors and investigators have also highlighted the involvement of Colombian private military contractors, allegedly trained in UAE military bases and hired by the UAE-based Global Security Services Group (GSSG), who operated drones and artillery during the offensive. Despite these findings, international accountability remains a central issue, with calls for sanctions against RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as “Hemedti,” and the entities involved in the conflict.
