El Marqués hosts colloquium on indigenous political rights
The XI Colloquium on Indigenous Peoples and Communities took place in El Marqués, Querétaro, to analyze mechanisms for ensuring the political participation and effective exercise of rights for indigenous populations. Under the theme “From constitutional recognition to effective participation,” the event brought together electoral authorities, community representatives, and academics.
Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González emphasized that legal recognition must translate into real opportunities for communities to participate in decision-making. Gilberto Bátiz García, president of the Superior Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal, noted that the primary challenge is ensuring constitutional recognition results in respected community decisions and access to justice without linguistic or procedural barriers.
The colloquium addressed topics such as self-determination, autonomy, and indigenous normative systems in preparation for upcoming federal and local electoral processes. Participants included representatives from various regions, including Michoacán, Querétaro, and Colima.
