Indigenous cultural site protection in Tamarugal
Overview
In the Tamarugal province, a colloquium was held involving over 150 participants, including indigenous community representatives, academics, and institutional actors. The event focused on the recognition and protection of sites with cultural significance.
Discussions centered on the relationship between historical land occupation and ownership processes, specifically regarding the preservation of spaces vital to indigenous peoples. Experts examined the transition of Aymara and Quechua property from traditional ayllus to current parcel regimes, as well as the management of fiscal property. Legal experts also addressed tensions regarding the recognition of indigenous cultural territories, noting how historical property processes have affected sites such as petroglyphs, apachetas, and spiritual locations like cemeteries. The colloquium sought to recover ancestral succession data to assist in land use solutions.
