Mexican normalista students launch widespread protests over education and safety

Students from various rural normal schools across Mexico are conducting a series of protests to demand improved educational infrastructure, better living conditions, and justice for deceased peers.

In Hidalgo, students from the Escuela Normal Rural Luis Villarreal “El Mexe” disrupted a regional report event led by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The demonstrators bypassed security to demand the full reopening of their campus, improved dormitory conditions, and an investigation into the homicide of student José Antonio Salgado Aparicio. The Ministry of the Interior (Segob) has announced it will review these demands alongside federal and state educational authorities.

In Morelos, students from the Escuela Normal Rural General Emiliano Zapata de Amilcingo occupied the offices of the Institute of Basic Education (IEBEM) to protest for infrastructure projects and the dismissal of an administrative worker accused of making threats. Meanwhile, in Cuautla, students marched to demand justice for the femicide of Claudia Tacoronte, a Spanish exchange student.

Other regional actions include students in Zacatecas blocking the Secretariat of Education to demand the restoration of professional practice stipends, and protests in Cuautla regarding the expansion of student enrollment without adequate facilities. In Sonora, authorities reported that the reconstruction of the Fausto Topete primary school is expected to conclude in October following previous infrastructure failures.
