El Nino strengthens, delaying Indonesia's rainy season

A strengthening El Nino phenomenon is expected to delay the onset of the rainy season in Indonesia, potentially pushing it to early or mid-January 2027. Experts from the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) warn that this delay could significantly impact the agricultural sector, as farmers may need to adjust planting calendars, which could lead to reduced productivity.

In West Java, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports that El Nino is currently reducing rainfall intensity. With a Niño 3.4 index recorded at +2.02, the agency predicts continued low rainfall in parts of the region through August 16, 2026. While light to moderate local rainfall may still occur, authorities have advised citizens to conserve water and remain vigilant regarding potential hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, landslides, and falling trees due to dynamic weather conditions.
