El Niño phenomenon intensifies toward historic strength

A strengthening Super El Niño phenomenon is causing significant global climatic shifts, with sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 region reaching +2.9°C, nearly matching the 50-year record of +3.0°C set in 2015. Experts from NOAA and the WMO indicate a high probability that this event will reach or exceed historic intensity levels by late 2026.

The phenomenon is expected to persist through the first half of 2027, bringing diverse impacts across different regions. In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization warns of rising public health risks, including food insecurity for millions and the spread of vector-borne diseases. Countries in Central America are facing drought in the Dry Corridor, while others deal with flooding and wildfires.

In other regions, the event is projected to alter precipitation and snow patterns in North America and Europe. In South America, particularly in the northern regions, sea surface temperatures have risen significantly, leading to decreased rainfall in parts of Venezuela, Colombia, and Guyana. Meanwhile, agricultural sectors, such as cocoa production, face threats from erratic rainfall patterns. Authorities in various countries have already issued emergency declarations to prepare for these extreme weather conditions.
