El Niño could reach historic intensity, impacting Brazil

The National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) reports that the El Niño phenomenon is likely to reach 'very strong' intensity during the October-November-December quarter. This event could be among the most intense recorded since 1950, according to the El Niño 2026-2027 Panel.

Climate projections for Brazil indicate significant regional variations. Southern Brazil is expected to experience above-average rainfall, increasing the risk of floods and heavy storms. In contrast, the North and Northeast regions face higher risks of drought and forest fires due to reduced precipitation and elevated temperatures. Parts of the Southeast and eastern Northeast may also see above-average rainfall.

Sea surface temperature anomalies in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific exceeded 2 °C at the end of September, as confirmed by CPC/NOAA data. Temperatures are expected to remain above average across much of the country.
