El Niño drives agricultural challenges in the UK and Panama

The upcoming ‘Super El Niño’, a strong warming of Pacific sea‑surface temperatures, is expected to reshape weather patterns worldwide. In the United Kingdom, the phenomenon may bring a wetter, milder start to winter followed by colder, calmer conditions later, influencing livestock markets mainly through shifts in global commodity prices rather than direct local weather.

In Panama, El Niño is forecast to cause prolonged dry spells, higher heat indices and drought risk, threatening staple crops such as rice and corn and reducing water supplies for irrigation and the Panama Canal. Rising fuel, fertilizer and other input costs compound the pressure on farmers, ranchers and fishermen. Authorities, including the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama, are urging early preparation, monitoring and coordinated response to mitigate agricultural losses.
