El Niño event expected to persist until 2027 with global impacts
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has signaled the development of a powerful El Niño event, with a nearly 100% probability of occurrence. Ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific are significantly above normal, with subsurface temperatures in some areas exceeding the norm by more than 8°C. This phenomenon is expected to persist until at least February 2027.
The event is projected to cause significant global weather disruptions. Expected impacts include increased drought in Central America, higher wildfire risks in Australia and Indonesia, and weakened monsoon rains in parts of Asia. Conversely, South America may face increased flooding. Experts warn that the synergy between this natural cycle and ongoing global warming could lead to 2027 becoming the hottest year on record.
In the Middle East, meteorologists note that El Niño may increase precipitation through enhanced moisture transport from the Arabian and Red Seas. The combination of ocean and atmospheric signals, including a strongly negative Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), confirms the strengthening of this event.
