El Niño expected to bring strong heat to Germany this summer

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed that the El Niño phenomenon has returned, with sea‑surface temperatures in the Pacific’s Niño‑3.4 region about 1.7 °C above average. The World Meteorological Organization warned that the event will reach a strong intensity between July and September, estimating an 80 % chance it will persist throughout the summer and possibly intensify into winter.

For Germany, the heightened global warmth from El Niño adds to the already stable high‑pressure patterns over Europe, increasing the likelihood of an extended heatwave in the coming weeks. The WMO also cautioned that the phenomenon may trigger stronger rainfall and drought in various world regions, urging countries to prepare for extreme weather.
