El Niño forecast predicts strong weather shifts globally
A very strong El Niño is forecasted to emerge between October and December, according to NOAA lead scientist Michelle L’Heureux, who notes an 81 percent chance of its arrival. Historically, intense El Niño events have caused significant global disruption, including the 1997 event which indirectly contributed to 23,000 deaths through floods, droughts, and wildfires.
In Papua New Guinea, the effects of the current climate cycle are already being felt. Schools in several provinces, including New Ireland and Madang, have implemented shortened operating schedules to protect students from extreme heat. Some early childhood and primary schools are finishing as early as 10 am or 12 pm. Officials have advised suspending outdoor activities and monitoring for heat exhaustion and dehydration.
In addition to heat concerns, environmental impacts are emerging in Papua New Guinea, such as reports of hundreds of dead fish in the Laviambo Lagoon due to unusually warm and shallow water levels.
