El Niño 2026‑27 Strong Event Threatens Global Agriculture and Weather

Satellite observations from NASA’s Sentinel‑6 confirm that a strong El Niño has re‑emerged in June 2026, raising sea‑level heights and sea‑surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific. NOAA has assigned a 63 % probability that the phenomenon will become “very strong” by the third quarter of 2026, potentially ranking among the most intense events recorded since 1950.

Meteorologists expect the El Niño to peak between October 2026 and January 2027, bringing a mix of drought, extreme heat and heavy rains. Forecasts warn of severe drought across the U.S. Great Plains, heightened fire risk in Australia and New Zealand, and flood‑prone conditions in Peru, Ecuador, East Africa and parts of Southeast Asia. In Latin America, reduced rains could stress water supplies in Venezuela and Colombia, while Brazil may see excess rain in the south and drought in the north, affecting sugar and coffee production. Argentina, Mexico and other regional growers face both flood and drought threats that could lower yields of wheat, corn, soy and livestock feed.

Analysts link the climate event to potential spikes in global food prices, especially for grains, vegetables, dairy and meat, as higher heat and reduced rainfall raise production costs and limit harvests. The combined effect of the El Niño and elevated fertilizer prices could add 1‑3 percentage points to food‑inflation rates in 2026‑27. The World Resources Institute also notes increased risk of wildfires in South America, Southeast Asia and Canada.

Authorities across the affected nations are advised to monitor weather updates, adjust planting schedules, protect water resources and prepare for possible supply‑chain disruptions.
