El Niño threatens global sugar production and supply
The El Niño climate phenomenon is threatening global sugar production, shifting the market from a surplus earlier this year toward a potential shortage in the current season. This volatility contributes to rising global food prices, which reached a nearly four-year high last month according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Key producing regions are facing diverse climatic challenges. In Brazil, the world’s largest producer, heavy rainfall is complicating sugarcane harvesting. India is experiencing its weakest monsoons since 2015, while Thailand is dealing with widespread drought in sugar-producing regions.
In Europe, extreme summer temperatures and prolonged drought have resulted in one of the lowest sugar beet yields in over a decade. France, the continent’s leading producer, is facing its lowest production levels since at least 1980. In the United States, drought has also impacted the timing and suitability of sugar beet harvests.
