Latin American nations implement emergency plans for El Niño

Multiple Latin American nations are implementing emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the El Niño phenomenon, which is threatening water supplies, energy stability, and food security.

In Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella has introduced the ‘Plan Energía YA’ to protect energy supplies. The plan includes incentives for energy savings and mechanisms to ensure thermal generation to prevent shortages during the 2026-2027 summer. Localized water shortages are already impacting regions like Vélez, Santander, where residents have resorted to water trucks.

Guatemala has announced a multi-axis plan led by President Bernardo Arévalo to address the climate crisis. The strategy focuses on food security for families affected by crop losses, strengthening peasant productivity, and developing irrigation and soil improvement practices to reduce agricultural vulnerability in the Central American Dry Corridor.

In the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, authorities are prioritizing water management and forest fire prevention. Secretary Karl Heinz Becker Hernández stated that the state is strengthening community brigades, firebreaks, and environmental education to adapt to the adverse climatic conditions expected through 2027.
