El Niño weather patterns spark debate over European winter forecasts

Long-term climate models and meteorological experts are discussing the potential impact of a strong El Niño event on European winter weather for the 2026/27 season.

In Germany, the NOAA CFS climate model suggests a mild winter with temperatures potentially reaching two degrees above average. This shift could lead to a transition from a dry autumn to a winter characterized by storms, heavy rain, and flooding rather than snow and frost.

However, meteorologist Sigi Fink has cautioned against alarmist predictions of a “century winter” in Austria. Fink notes that while El Niño significantly affects the South Pacific, its influence on Central European winter weather is not decisive. He argues that regional factors, such as the polar front and Mediterranean temperatures, play a more critical role, and warns that it is too early to make definitive seasonal predictions.
