El Poblet estate served as final Republican government seat
The El Poblet estate, located between Elda and Petrer and designated as a Cultural Interest Site, served as the final residence for the Spanish Republican government during the closing days of the Civil War. Known by the code name Posición Yuste, the site hosted the executive led by socialist Juan Negrín from February 25 to March 6, 1939.
Following the fall of Barcelona to Francoist troops in late January 1939, Negrín briefly established himself in Le Perthus before secretly flying from Toulouse to Alicante on February 10. His objective was to prevent a total surrender and continue the conflict. Despite efforts to convince military leaders in Valencia to persist in the war, the Republican defeat became inevitable as Catalonia, Madrid, and finally Alicante fell. General Franco officially declared the end of the war on April 1, 1939.
