Andalusia declares health alerts following new West Nile Virus cases

Health authorities in Andalusia have confirmed new human cases of West Nile Virus in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and Utrera (Sevilla). These cases, which involve serious neuroinvasive symptoms, bring the total number of confirmed human infections in the region to 66 for 2026.

In El Puerto de Santa María, an affected resident is currently hospitalized with meningoencephalitis. In response, the Junta de Andalucía has declared the Campiña-Serrano area an alert zone until at least October 16. This designation mandates intensified entomological, animal, and human surveillance, alongside increased mosquito control and larvicidal treatments.

To date, the regional outbreak has resulted in three deaths. While approximately 60% of cases present mild symptoms, a significant portion involves neuroinvasive complications. Currently, 27 municipalities in Andalusia remain under alert due to the circulation of the virus. Authorities are also conducting screenings of blood donors and laboratory studies to manage the spread.
