El Salvador boosts corn and bean production to strengthen food security

El Salvador is implementing a food security strategy focused on increasing the domestic production of corn and beans to stabilize prices and ensure supply. Based on data from CID Gallup, the country consumes approximately 9.79 million quintals of corn and 1.60 million quintals of beans annually.

Through the Production Enhancement Program, authorities aim to reach annual outputs of up to 12 million quintals of corn and 1.9 million quintals of beans. The strategy utilizes early planting in high-rainfall areas, irrigation systems, and the adoption of high-yield hybrid seeds to increase productivity per manzana.

To complement domestic harvests, the government is coordinating with the private sector to manage imports and maintain strategic reserves. Authorities have also encouraged consumers to report any unjustified price increases to the Consumer Protection Agency.
