Salvadoran troops launch major gang operations in Haiti

Salvadoran military forces have launched their first major operation in Haiti’s Cul-de-Sac plain, targeting the Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo gangs. The mission, part of the UN-mandated Gang Suppression Force (GSF), aims to dismantle criminal groups responsible for the disappearance of four Salvadoran aviation technicians during an ambush on October 18 near Croix-des-Bouquets.

Reports indicate that clashes between Salvadoran troops and armed groups in the Santo and Croix-des-Missions sectors have resulted in at least ten gang members being killed. The operation involves armored vehicles and specialized units, supported by the Haitian National Police. While Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele has expressed public support for the troops, Wilson Joseph, leader of the 400 Mawozo gang, has reportedly requested UN mediation to facilitate a peace dialogue, claiming the military presence could escalate violence.

In a separate logistical development, the Dominican Republic facilitated the shipment of approximately 525 tons of military equipment, including weapons and specialized vehicles, from the Port of Haina to Haiti. This shipment, originating from Bangladesh and financed by Germany, is intended to bolster the GSF operations. UN officials have described the Dominican Republic’s logistical role as essential to the international security initiatives in the country.
